Most people fly into Phuket International Airport, which is about forty five minutes from Patong. You can either hire a car at the airport, or get a bus or taxi.
If wanting to drive from Bangkok, this will take a good 8-10 hours, and maybe an overnight at Hua Hin to break the journey. Going by train is slower and does not go all the way to Phuket.
