About Plovdiv
It will be the European City of Culture in 2019 and is the second largest city in Bulgaria, and has been around for quite a while, and lays claim to an 8,000 year history, the longest in Europe.
Unfortunately, because it is so old, people have forgotten what the name actually means, although Philip and lake, have been inferred.
However, if it meant
six hills, then at least it would tell yo that you will find these within the city, but not seven, as their were once, before one was flattened.
Sitting on the banks of the River Maritsa, it is about a hundred miles south east of Sofia. There is lots do if going for a weekend, and the Central Square is a good place to start, as any.
