About Gerona Airport

This very busy airport serves as a gateway to the Girona region and is also favoured by tourists wishing to visit nearby Barcelona. Being serviced by the cheaper Budget airlines such as Ryan Air, flying into Girona can work out more cost effective than flying direct to Barcelona Airport with less stress.

One other point to note is that Girona is often spelt Gerona. Both names are correct one being the Spanish spelling the other Catalan.

The single storey airport is split into 2 areas, area P0 is designated for departures and P1 for arrivals. The airport has the normal array of duty free shops selling the normal range of items plus local produce.

Gerona has had quite a tough past, with everyone who is anyone attacking it and taking it, so it no surprise that the city walls are still in existence, even if some had recently been re-built.

A favourite option is to hire a car from Girona Airport and drive along the splendid coastline and stopping of at your own leisure at one of beaches on route along the Costa Brava. If driving from central Spain then take the A2 motorway to Zaragoza and change to A7 once past Barcelona and continue north until you see exit for Girona.
