About Stansted Airport (STN)

It is to the north east of London, some thirty miles away from the centre of London, so provides a handy cheap alternative, as airlines like Easyjet and Stansted fly here. The IATA code for the airport is STN. The airport is near the strangely named village of Stansted Mountfitchet, which is only two miles away. The history of the name comes from Stansted, meaning stony place in Saxon, and the name of a long dead Norman baron.

It is the fourth busiest airport in the UK, with about eighteen million passengers. It does operate twenty four hours a day, but some flight restrictions apply over night. It is home to Ryan Air, so it is no surprise that the most popular place to fly to is Spain, with Alicante and Malaga, being the main two. Easyjet is not that far behind in terms of flights and passengers to Ryan Air. Thomson are the main charter airline flying out of here. The roof of the terminal is meant to be like a swan in flight. The airport began life during the Second World War.
