A Costa Rica Road Cruise
Starting in San Jose, the road northwest toward La Fortuna offers Costa Rica’s most varied and adventure-packed drive. Leaving the capital, the route follows Highway 1 before turning onto winding country roads lined with coffee farms and small towns. The terrain shifts from urban sprawl to green valleys and forested hills.
Approaching La Fortuna, the cone of Arenal Volcano rises above the landscape, dominating the skyline. The town itself is lively, with access to hot springs, waterfalls, and rainforest trails. From here, the road loops around Lake Arenal, offering wide views of the water and distant peaks.
Continuing toward Monteverde, the road becomes steeper and rougher, passing through farmland and cloud forest. The final stretch climbs into mist-covered hills, where wildlife and thick vegetation surround the route. The drive ends in a quiet town known for canopy walks and birdwatching.
Roads are paved but vary in quality—some sections require a four-wheel drive. Fuel stations are available in major towns, and traffic is light outside weekends. The full drive from San Jose to Monteverde via La Fortuna and Lake Arenal takes about six hours, but stopping along the way turns it into a full day journey.
