Spend a few days in Porto first, by exploring all those world heritage sites during the day. Relax in the evenings in one of the many restaurants in the old quarter. Enjoy great wine and fresh seafood.
The ancient narrow streets of the Ribeira riverside area of Oporto, have been classified as a world heritage site. This, along with ongoing restoration, has changed this area into a very popular place to dine, shop and relax with it's wide collection of restaurants, bars and boutique shops.
Do not leave Porto without seeing the famous vineyards of Douro Valley. These can be reached by hire car, boat or train, from the town centre.
If you do have a rental car, then it makes for a perfect day out. The owners are friendly and normally offer free tasting. This area is also home to some of the most picturesque villages in Portugal.

Scenic Porto Route
Start your drive in Porto and head east along the N108 or A4 toward the Douro Valley. This route follows the Douro River and passes through terraced vineyards, small villages, and rolling hills. Stop in Peso da Regua or Pinhao for wine tasting and river views. The Douro Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From Pinhao, continue through the valley toward Vila Real or loop back via the scenic N222 road, often called one of the most beautiful drives in Europe. The road curves along the river and offers panoramic views of the valley and vineyards.
If you want a coastal route, drive south from Porto to Aveiro. This town is known for its canals, colorful boats, and Art Nouveau buildings. The drive passes beaches and salt flats, making it a relaxing seaside escape
Food, Wine and Car Rental in Porto
One of the attractions of Portugal is the abundance of good seafood, plus a fantastic range of good wines, both of which are relatively cheap. Porto offers a multitude of low cost restaurants that serve good value food.
One worthy of mention is Machado, in Albergaria Machado. This restaurant has built its reputation on quality local and seafood fare at low prices. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. They do not accept credit cards (one of the reasons why prices are reasonable).
