About Oulu

If you want to visit the top of the world, Oulu is one of the farthest north places you can get to by scheduled flight, hence the near arctic climate. This makes it a good spot to see the Northern Lights.

Once an ancient trading site based at the mouth of the river Oulu, present day Oulu has evolved into the largest city in Northern Finland.

Some Scenic Oulu Routes

The Pohjola route from Oulu to Hailuoto Island where you cross by ferry and drive through dunes pine forests and fishing villages along the Bay of Bothnia. Head south to Liminka and explore Liminganlahti with its birdwatching towers and wetland views.

Continue east toward Rokua Geopark where ancient glacial formations and quiet lakes create a surreal atmosphere.

Drive north to Syote National Park with winding roads through arctic forests and year-round outdoor activities. Finish with a loop west to Raahe where coastal roads and historic wooden architecture meet the sea breeze

For longer adventures try a round trip from Oulu through western and northern Finland covering sandy beaches wild forests and national parks

Oulu To Do? - If you time it right, you may take part in the annual summer Music and Video Festival and Air Guitar World championships. Yes, air guitar, so if you fancy yourself as an undiscovered Hendrix, Townsend or Gallagher, why not take part, as it is a most enjoyable festival, and not to be taken too seriously.

If arriving in Helsinki, then why not rent a car from the airport and drive to Oulu. The distance is roughly 600kms, but the road system is first class and well sign posted, allowing you to enjoy the countryside.

Do watch for any stray moose, that have a habit of wondering onto the roads. Alternatively a regular train service is available from Helsinki to Oulu train station, or fly direct to Oulu Airport.
