A Medellin Motoring Moment
Beginning in Medellin, the road east toward Guatape offers Colombia's most vivid and rewarding drive. Leaving the city, the route climbs into the hills, passing through green valleys and small towns. The terrain shifts quickly from urban to rural, with views of farms, forests, and distant peaks.
Passing through Marinilla and El Penol, the road dips toward the reservoir and the massive rock formation known as La Piedra. The climb to the top reveals wide views of the lake and its scattered islands. Guatape itself is a colourful town with painted buildings, cobbled streets, and a relaxed pace.
The final stretch loops around the lake, with chances to stop for boat rides, swimming, or lunch by the water. Roads are paved and in good condition, though some curves require attention. Traffic is light outside weekends, and signs are clear. The full drive from Medellin to Guatape takes about two hours, but stopping along the way turns it into a full day journey.
