Taiwan lies no more than 110 miles off mainland China. Two-thirds of the country is composed of mountains. The highest point is the Jade Mountain or the Yu Shan, which is almost 4,000 meters high.

The capital of Taiwan is the city of Taipei. The other major cities are New Taipei, Hsinchu, Hualien, Jiufen, Kaohsiung, Keelung, Puli, Taichung, and Tainan.

The Taiwanese invented the popular game Mahjong. However, gambling is generally considered illegal.
