About Taitung

Taiwan's climate is considered to be marine tropical. It can be very hot and humid during the summer and very cold during the winter. The list of popular Taiwanese includes Ang Lee, a Hollywood movie director, Chao Fong-pang, a pro pool player, Hu Chin-Lung, a baseball player, David Chu, the founder of the Nautica clothing line for men, and Ando Momofuku, the person who invented the instant noodles.

Taiwan lies no more than 110 miles off mainland China. Two-thirds of the country is composed of mountains. The highest point is the Jade Mountain or the Yu Shan, which is almost 4,000 meters high.

The capital of Taiwan is the city of Taipei. The other major cities are New Taipei, Hsinchu, Hualien, Jiufen, Kaohsiung, Keelung, Puli, Taichung, and Tainan.

The Taiwanese invented the popular game Mahjong. However, gambling is generally considered illegal.
