Taiwan was first inhabited by Aborigines, when the island was still joined to mainland Asia, during olden times. Later on sea levels rose and Taiwan became an island. Trading posts were established in the island until Chinese and Japanese forces assumed sovereignty. Right now, the country is considered a part of the Republic of China.
