About Oman
There are just over four million people, of mainly Ibadi Islam faith. The locals are known as Omani and the official language is Omani Arabic.
Industry - Oil and gas account for most of it.
Sport - There is a wide spread of sport being taught and played.
Oman is currently split in two by the United Arab Emirates. The country terrain is mainly fertile coastal plain, or Batinah, in the extreme north. The region to the south is dotted with small fishing harbours. The coastal region, or coast of Dhofar, lies in the far south and is also fertile and home to prime cattle that graze the green pasture surrounding Dhofar's mountains.
Oh My! Oman Motoring
A standout drive in Oman begins in Muscat and heads southwest toward Nizwa. Leaving the capital, the road quickly opens up to desert plains and rocky hills. The highway is smooth and well-marked, with light traffic and wide views. Along the way, small towns and wadis break up the landscape, offering chances to stop and explore. The terrain shifts gradually from coastal to inland, with mountains rising in the distance.
Reaching Nizwa, the town is known for its fort, traditional souq, and date plantations. From here, the drive can continue up into the Al Hajar Mountains toward Jebel Akhdar. This section climbs steeply and requires a four-wheel drive, but the road is paved and secure. The air cools as the elevation rises, and the views become more dramatic. Terraced farms and small villages line the slopes, and the route ends near Saiq Plateau.
Another option is to head south from Muscat along the coast toward Sur. This drive passes through Quriyat and Wadi Shab, with access to beaches and canyons. Sur is a quiet town with a history of shipbuilding and a relaxed pace. Both routes offer strong contrasts in scenery and rhythm.
Roads in Oman are among the best in the region, with reliable signage and frequent fuel stations. The drive from Muscat to Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar is the most varied and rewarding, combining desert, history, and mountain views.
