Maltese Motoring

Usually starts in Valletta and heads west toward Mdina. Leaving Valletta, the road passes through the towns of Hamrun and Birkirkara, with a mix of old buildings and modern shops. The terrain is mostly flat, and traffic can be busy near the capital but eases as you move inland. Reaching Mdina, the old walled city sits on a hill and offers views across the island. The streets are narrow and quiet, and the city is best explored on foot.

From Mdina, the drive can continue south toward Dingli Cliffs. This stretch is more rural, with open fields and stone walls lining the road. The cliffs offer a wide view of the sea and are one of the highest points on the island. The area is peaceful and good for short walks. From Dingli, the road can loop east toward the Blue Grotto near Zurrieq. The coastline here is rocky, and boat tours are available to see the sea caves.

Roads in Malta are paved and well-marked, though some village streets are tight. Driving is on the left side, and signs are in English and Maltese. Fuel stations are common, and distances are short. The route from Valletta to Mdina, Dingli Cliffs, and the Blue Grotto offers the most variety in scenery and access to both inland and coastal views.
