Best Drive in Lithuania?

We suggest it begins in Vilnius, and heads northwest toward the town of Trakai and then on to Kaunas. Leaving Vilnius, the road quickly reaches Trakai, known for its island castle set in a lake. The drive is short but scenic, with forested areas and small villages along the way. Trakai offers a chance to walk around the castle, take a boat ride, or try local dishes like kibinai.

From Trakai, the route continues to Kaunas, Lithuania’s second-largest city. The road is smooth and passes through farmland and patches of forest. Kaunas has a mix of old and modern architecture, with highlights like the Old Town, the pedestrian Laisves Avenue, and the Ninth Fort memorial. The drive between Vilnius and Kaunas takes about ninety minutes and is one of the most traveled routes in the country.

For a longer trip, the drive can extend north to the Hill of Crosses near Siauliai. This site is filled with thousands of crosses and is a major symbol of faith and resistance. The road from Kaunas to Siauliai is quiet and passes through rural areas with open fields and small towns.

Roads in Lithuania are well-maintained, and traffic is light outside major cities. Fuel stations are common, and signs are clear. The route from Vilnius to Trakai to Kaunas, with an optional extension to Siauliai, offers a strong mix of history, culture, and landscape.
