Facts on Ivory Coast

The Ivory coast has a mixed climate, tropical along the coast and a semi-arid climate as you move inland towards the North. West African Franc is the local currency in this country on the west coast of Africa.

The local are known as Ivorians, or Ivoirians,(there is an extra "i" in the latter), the Ivory Coast is home to many different ethnic and cultural groups. About 70% of the people belong to four major cultural groups the Akan in the southeast, the Kru in the southwest, the Mande in the northwest, and the Voltaic in the north-central and northeast.

The Ivory Coast exports cocoa beans, coffee and palm oil, with petroleum helping out. The main main international airport is Abidjan's Felix Houphouet Boigny Airport. They gained independence from France in 1960.

Famous people include Didier Drogba, the footballer. Abidjan is the capital. Football is mainly followed, but rugby union is also popular.

Islam and Roman Catholic, are the two main religions for the population of over twenty million people that live here.
