Florence Airport is rather small and has a single runway. To get out of the airport via bus, the Volainbus airport shuttle is called upon. This bus line follows a certain time table so you better plan your itinerary well.
There are coach lines serving the area too and one of them is run by Terravision, who claim to be a low cost express coach that can take you from the airport and right into the heart of Florence.
A private transfer to your actual destination is also available. Just make sure that you book this service early if you prefer it, as they will not be able to accommodate you without prior booking. There is a train serving the city as well.

The old town is closed to traffic making walking easy and relaxed with lots of coffee and pastry shops should you need a break. Most visitors just spend just a few days in bustling Florence and then explore by rental car the nearby towns of Lucca, Prato, Fiesole and Pisa with its leaning towers.
