About Sassari

Sassari is on the north west tip of Sardinia. Although near the coast, it is about 800 feet above sea level, but then gently slopes down towards the sea, where you get over 30km of beaches and coastline. It is one of the oldest on the island and has lots of culture to admire and is the second most populous city in Sardinia.

Some Scenic Sassari Drives

One of the most rewarding scenic drives from Sassari is the route to Castelsardo along the northern coastline. This drive offers sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea, rugged cliffs, and colorful fishing villages. Castelsardo itself is a medieval town perched on a hill with narrow streets, a castle, and panoramic views of the Gulf of Asinara. The road hugs the coast and is especially stunning at sunset.

Another beautiful drive heads inland toward the Monte Forte area, where winding roads pass through olive groves, vineyards, and rolling hills. This route showcases the rural charm of northern Sardinia and offers stops at small villages where you can experience traditional Sardinian culture and cuisine. The route from Sassari to Alghero takes you through the Nurra plain and past historical landmarks like the Nuraghe Santu Antine. As you approach Alghero, the road curves along the coast with views of turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs. Alghero itself is known for its Catalan heritage, old town charm, and nearby beaches like Spiaggia di Maria Pia and Le Bombarde.

Quite a sight and not to be missed. Alghero Airport isthe nearest, which also known as Fertilia Airport. If arriving by sea, the nearest port is Porto Torres.
