Driving Around Burkina Faso
The best drive in Burkina Faso begins in the capital, Ouagadougou, and heads southwest toward Bobo-Dioulasso. This route covers roughly 360 kilometers and offers a mix of urban life, rural landscapes, and cultural depth. Leaving Ouagadougou, the road passes through small towns and villages where local markets and roadside stalls give a glimpse into daily life. The terrain is mostly flat with stretches of savannah and scattered baobab trees.
As the drive continues, the town of Koudougou offers a chance to stop and explore local crafts and textiles. Further along, the road passes through Boromo, a quiet town surrounded by forested areas and known for its wildlife. The final stretch leads to Bobo-Dioulasso, the country’s second-largest city and a cultural hub. Bobo is known for its music scene, colonial architecture, and the Grand Mosque built in traditional Sudano-Sahelian style.
Road conditions vary, with the main highway generally paved but subject to wear and occasional potholes. Traffic is light outside the cities, and fuel stations are available but not frequent, so planning ahead is wise. The drive from Ouagadougou to Bobo-Dioulasso is the most rewarding in Burkina Faso, offering a direct route through the heart of the country.
