An Angolan Drive

The best drive in Angola starts in Luanda, the capital, and heads south along the coast toward Benguela. This route offers a mix of urban energy, colonial history, and natural scenery. Leaving Luanda, the road passes through smaller towns and fishing villages before reaching the city of Sumbe.

The coastline here is rugged and dramatic, with views of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and hills on the other. Continuing south, the drive reaches Lobito, a port town with colonial architecture and a laid-back vibe. From Lobito, the road leads to Benguela, known for its beaches and cultural landmarks. The drive between Lobito and Benguela is short but scenic, with ocean views and palm-lined roads.

For those seeking more adventure, the route can extend inland to the city of Lubango. This part of the drive climbs into the highlands, offering cooler temperatures and mountain views. Near Lubango, the Tundavala Gap provides a dramatic overlook with cliffs dropping into the plains below. Another highlight is the Serra da Leba pass, a winding mountain road with sharp curves and panoramic views. This section is often considered the most iconic drive in Angola.

Road conditions vary, with some stretches well-paved and others requiring caution. Fuel stations are available but can be spaced out, so planning ahead is important.

Diamonds are always a girls' best friend but Angola is also rich in gold, oil etc. Luanda is where most journeys will begin, but the Atlantic rollers on the beaches also appeal. Luanda International is where most people will land.

The weather is either warm and dry, or warm and wet, as only has two seasons. Troubled by internal conflict until recently this former colony of Portugal gained independence in 1975.

Luanda is the capital and one of the most expensive in the world to live in. Football, like most African countries, is by far the most popular sport. About twenty million people call Angola their home.
