Drive hire car into Mexico?
Dollar now allow you to rent a car at San Diego and drive into Mexico, but extra insurance must be taken out locally. Not allowed from other depots. Must return car to USA.A bit about California. California is vast, and geographically diverse. The Sierra Nevada Mountain range stretches over 400 miles. Then you have the Pacific coastline that starts at the Baja California border. It is warm and tropical, turning rugged as it reaches the state of Oregon. Inland lies the one time desert land of Central Valley, which is now rich, irrigated farmland producing fruit, vegetables and some great wines.
Around California

Next, take you hire car and visit Yosemite National Park with its amazing Alpine vistas, approx a four hour drive east of San Fran. Don't leave California without a day trip by hire car to the wine lands of Sonoma and Napa Valley, both less than an hour drive to the north.
Palm Springs and San Diego. Point your California hire car towards the Mexican border and visit San Diego. A major tourist attraction with a world famous zoo and Sea World, which are both fun and educational. East of LA and a short drive by hire car is Palm Springs, once the 'Playground of the Stars', but now a major retirement and holiday destination. It is also a favourite for gays and lesbians, with seven times the national average, which is even higher that San Francisco.
If you need to relax from all that driving and sightseeing, then stop off at Monterey, which is great for golfing, or just relaxing on the beach.
